Camp USARTHAI - Camp #44 Main Gate Sign!
From the above Timetable of U.S. Army in Thailand Construction & Support,
you may very well conclude that the 44th Engineer Group was activated in December, 1962
and began to construct a small camp north of the air field in Korat and just south of the railroad station in Korat ...
The camp, Camp USARTHAI (U.S. Army - Thailand,) remained the Hqs for the 44th Engr Gp (Const)
until final stage completion of the major camp/base of Camp Friendship six (6) years later ...
809th Engineer Battalion was moved from Okinawa in March, 1963
to become one of two major construction battalions utilized in Thailand ...
During this period, large warehouses were constructed to provide material shelters for the 9th Logistics Command
activated the following April, 1963 ...
February, 1964 would see early construction elements of Engineer Companies
man'd by less than company-strength U.S. military staffing, but augmented by hundreds of Thai workers ...
In July, 1965, the second engineer construction battalion, the 538th, would be activated
and concentrate its project efforts in Southern Thailand on Thai camps, Army camp to be known as Camp Samae San
with initial billeting at a camp not far from the town of Satahip and the major logistics deep water port
Camp Vayama ...   This camp was just north of the Thai Navy installation and the town,
and the U-Tapao Royal Thai Air Force Base was south, southeast with the deep water port between ...
See Satahip Port Complex Project Map 16 for details on projects planned for Nov'67 and the next 2 years ...
The other major project was the construction of the "Friendship Highway,"
a highway running between the deep water port in the south at Satahip to the north and Nakhon Phanom (NKP) ...
The 538th would work on the portions south of Korat while the 809th would continue north ...
In between, pipe or pipelines would be needed at the camps and the 697th (Pipeline)
came on the scene in 1965 and departed end of 1969, a month before my departure ...
