Dear Klaus:

I wish I could help but I do not know Mr. Samuel. I also was in

Panomsarakram, but was with the 519th Transportation Batallion.

However, I will send you the address of a person who has a wealth

of information on the era you are searching. His name is Joe Wilson,

a great guy, and he has all sorts of information. His e-mail address

appears above. Please let me know if you are successful.

Dear Mr. Cavaretta, on behalf of a Thai friend of mine, who is a

TV producer and Thai movie Star I am looking to locate his father,

whom he has never met in his life.

The only Information he got is that his name was SFC Samuel, who

served in 1963 to 1964 in Thailand and frequented the NCO Club in

Panomsarakram District of Chanoengsao. He served in the 809th Battalion

which I understand was part of the Engineering Corps. I would be grateful

if you could help us to locate SFC Samuel. I can assure you that my Thai

friend has no financial interest in this research, he only wants to know

something about his father.

  Pls E-mail me to klausklinke@hotmail.com.

p.s. I am German and first came to Thailand in 1968. Thanks for your help

Dear Joe,

I was told by Ken Cavaretta that you are a nice guy who got a lot of
information re. Thailand and I hope yoiu might help me to locate SFC Samuel,
who served during 1963/64 with the 809th Battallion at Panomsarakram
District in Chachoengsao/ Thailand.

I am looking for him as a friend of mine, who is a TV producer and actor in
Thailand told me, that Samuel is his father but he never got to meet him as
he left his mother when she became pregnant. Now this friend of mine is not
interested in any money or other issues, as he is weel-off, got a big house,
his own weekly TV show, cars, a production house etc. What he is missing is
information about one of his parents. His mother, who is now almost seventy
does not know Samuels surname, nor does she know any other details about the
father of my friend who certainly is Amerasian. The mother says she never
had any other man in her life than this Samuel. By the way, my friend's
nickname is Sam and under this name he is known by the Thai moviegoers and
TV audience. He is quite a good-looking and nice guy.

It would be great if you could help to locate this Samuel, for all we know
he might be dead, might be in need of help or whatsoever. the Thai Sam has
nothing against his American father, only he wants to know a bit about his
roots as far as the American side is involved. The mother's nickname was
"Jaroon" and she met Samuel at the NCO's Club at Panomsarakram.

I guess there must be some official list of the Officers and NGO's who
served with the 809th Battalion of the Engineering corps during 1963/1964,
only I don't know whom to ask at the Pentagon or other organisations who
keep such records.

I myself have been living on and off in Thailand since 1967.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon, I remain,

Yours Sincerely,

Klaus Klinke

Comments: I'm jealous of all you guys who came later and got all the cream. I was

in Panom from 62-63 and it was living HELL! Imagine eating Spam for 20 days

straight and getting rice locally cause you had not established a supply chain yet.

Seven day work weeks, 12 hour days sweating so much that when you got back to your

hootch took off your t-shirt and let it dry it would be stiff as a board from the

dried salt.

Watching guys go nuts from the strain of the work. No trips to Bangkok, my

Platoon Sergant said I was too valuable to the job so after EIGHT MONTHS IN-Country

I went AWOL to Bangkok for three days and didn't even get punished. That and a whole

bunch of other reasons including all the newbies who came after us and raised the

price of everything from _____ to liquor and fell in love with everything is why you

won't see too many of us FIRST_TIMERS respond to this. most of us would just as soon

forget it ever happened. And, don't get me wrong I was no wuss in fact I was the

baddest mother who ever set foot in

Comments: I was a Personnel Specialist assigned to the 561st Engr Co and attached

to the 809th Personnel Office at Camp Charn Sinthope in 1964. I kept track of

senior enlisted and officer records and forecasted everyone for the return to the

States. CWO Allen Terry was Personnel Officer, CPT Elwood Nichols was Adjutant,

CPT John Wall was CO of 561st Engr Co (nickname "BridgeBuilder"). LTC Wayne

Nichols was BN CO. I've got a whole bunch of names of others who appeared on the

same promotion orders as I did, but haven't a clue where they are now. There was

also a PFC Ponder and SP4 Potter, and we were always being confused. And who can

forget SP5 Phil Guyette. Don't call him by his last name in polite society!! God,

that was 35 years ago, and I still remember it like yesterday. Well, sort of.

Comments: I WAS WITH B Company 809th at Panom Sarakam in 1962-63.

We were pioneering the road at that time, as long as it was not raining. If a

cloud popped up, we went back to camp fast. We lost a td-24 in quick sand and

almost lost a couple of blades. When I was there, there was a lot of bandits

and wild dogs running around. We had to organize a hunting party to eliminate

as many dos as possible. Anyone there when I was there?
