SouthEast Asia (S.E.A.) Service
Kue, Okinawa (1963), ARMY MEDCEN
Korat, Thailand (64-65) 31st Field Hospital
Pay Grade: E-5 SP/5 (in Korat)
MOS: 931.3J Title: Med Lab Specialist
Retired - Command Sergeant Major
U.S. Army Reserves (34 Years)
Job Description:
As the only Lab person, I was responsible
for all the lab procedures to include blood
counts, urine tests, bacteriology, chemistry
tests, drawing donors, and yes, even checking
smears, etc. for "Social Diseases" and
rendering diagnoses to the Docs so they could
treat folks. The most important job I had,
however, was running the pre-embarkation
blood/urine tests so folks could go home.
I also ran a Lab Assistant school for several Thai Nationals.
Left Thailand, went back to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.
in December, 1965. Wasn't long I came down on overseas orders again. At
this point, my dad died and I really didn't want to leave my mom...comedy of
errors trying to get compassionate reassignment, so I got out (ETS) as an E6.
Worked in D.C. in a hospital until 1972, then moved down here where my family
was. Got married, went to work in a safety job (nuclear) at the shipyard here,
working on Navy nuclear boats. Did that 20 years, became known as the ]
"department computer guy". Transferred to computer department, working there
now.
Joined the Army Reserve in D.C.; got called up for "Desert Storm" (Mobilization
Specialist), stayed at the MEDCENTER in Denver; retired as a Command Sergeant
Major in 1997 with a total of 34 years. I can't draw retirement until age 60
or 2004. Looking forward to that check, although it will be smaller than
conventional retirement, ie, about 30% or so.
